about the project

silgo is a cultural and digital product concept designed to preserve, teach, and disseminate the silbo gomero, a whistled language that, while still alive in la gomera, is gradually declining and remains largely unknown or unused across the rest of the canary islands. the project explores how contemporary digital tools can act as a bridge between technology and a millenary form of communication, connecting heritage with present-day ways of learning.

conceived as more than a language-learning app, silgo places la gomera itself at the centre of the experience. understanding silbo requires understanding the land, its geography, and its people. for this reason, the app integrates learning modules, interactive routes, oral history, interviews, and popular knowledge, transforming exploration of the island into an immersive cultural experience rather than a purely touristic one.

the brand identity reflects this vision through an energetic, flexible visual system inspired by wind and movement. the central symbol, the letter “g”, references both gomera and the wind that carries sound across ravines, just as it did for previous generations. this dynamic form is supported by a colour palette drawn directly from the island’s natural environment, including laurel forests, mountains, and vegetation, creating a contemporary brand rooted in place and memory.

my role encompassed the concept definition, narrative framework, brand identity design, and visual direction of the project. silgo was developed as a platform where heritage, landscape, and technology coexist, offering a fresh and accessible way to keep an ancestral language relevant today.

result & outcome

the result is a digital space that positions silbo gomero and la gomera as living heritage, not frozen in the past but actively connected to the present. under the concept “united by the wind”, silgo frames wind as the element that historically enabled communication, connection, and survival, and now symbolically unites past and present through technology.

this project reflects my desire to protect and reactivate canarian cultural heritage through design. born from a personal journey to la gomera, silgo became a natural response to the visible disconnection between tradition and contemporary life. it reinforced my belief that design can and should create space for the past to coexist with the present, ensuring that cultural knowledge remains meaningful, accessible, and alive.
